Frederic Rzewski - The People United Will Never Be Defeated (1974) Rodrigo Lira

Frederic Rzewski, born in Westfield, Massachusetts in 1938 is a virtuoso pianist active presence since the early 60's, studied Harvard and shared with John Cage and David Tudor. He wrote the play 'Jefferson' in 1970, based on the front lines of the declaration of American independence in 1972 wrote 'Coming Together' where low instruments accompany the reading of a letter written by a prisoner in Attica prison, New York ( topic also addressed by John Lennon, at the time). At that time Rzewski's work became increasingly political, which would reach its peak with the show 'The People United Will Never Be Defeated! ", Which is a sum of 36 variations on the song' El Pueblo Unido Never Be Defeated ', one of his greatest achievements during the period 1971 to 1976 when I lived in New York Rzewski.

Rzewski said: "It seemed to me that there was no reason for formal structures more difficult and complex could not be expressed in a form that could be understood by much of the audience. I was concerned also appeared to be a crisis of theory, not only in music but also in science and politics, then explored the way in which existing musical languages \u200b\u200bcould be gathered.
The original song was written by Sergio Ortega, who three months before the Pinochet coup heard a street singer screaming against Finance Ministry: "The people united will never be defeated." Days later sat at the piano and wrote the song, which was performed two days later by Quilapayún and quickly became an anthem of the Chilean resistance.
This album was made by our friend Jose Gutierrez, who had previously been done this with the album "Voice and Guitar. The Folklore of Chile. Vol 1 "by Violeta Parra.'s Hear it for him.

"By clinching the world title at 16 years old, the new World Chess Champion, Hou Yifan has even surpassed that feat Maia Chiburdanidze, which was crowned champion at 17. Hou, after Xie Jun (1991-1996 and 1999-2001), Zhu Chen (2001-2003) and Xu Yuhua (2006-2008) is the fourth champion the world comes from China. The China women's national team won Olympic gold chess between 1998 and 2004 on four occasions. Of the eight participants in Antakya, three reached the semifinals. There is no denying that there is some dominance of Chinese chess. Its achievements are being the more extraordinary, given that chess has no tradition in the Middle Kingdom. Chess is a sport that hardly has been practiced in China. " ('Chessbase')
